Heat, not just temperature.

Wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) is the metric HeatTrackR is built around. It combines air temperature, humidity, wind, and radiant heat — the load a body actually feels on a course, not the number on a bank sign.

NormalBelow 22 °C
Advisory22 °C and above
High25 °C and above
Warning28 °C and above
Extreme32 °C and above

Those numbers color the console. They are not your event’s official protocol.

Why air temperature is not enough

A 78 °F morning with still air, high humidity, and full sun is a different event than 78 °F with a breeze and overcast. Race and occupational heat programs use WBGT because it accounts for those other terms. HeatTrackR also shows temperature, humidity, wet bulb, globe temperature, heat index, and wind — but the primary gauge is WBGT.

Measured, estimated, and forecast

Those three words are not interchangeable in the console. Measured WBGT comes from an instrument (or an IrisTrackR payload) that reports it. Estimated WBGT is derived when HeatTrackR has the inputs — ISO 7243 from wet bulb, globe, and air, or a BOM-style approximation from temperature and humidity. Forecast WBGT is derived from the NWS grid forecast. The label on a reading tells you which one you are looking at.

Console colors, not a medical protocol

The dashboard colors WBGT bands for scanning: normal below 22 °C, advisory at 22, high at 25, warning at 28, extreme at 32. Those are display bands in HeatTrackR. They are not a governing-body protocol, and they are not medical advice. Your event still uses whatever standard you already run — ACSM, World Athletics, a local medical director, or your own table.

HeatTrackR does not start or stop the race

The product watches conditions and fires the rules you set. It does not decide whether to delay the start, shorten the course, or pull athletes. That call stays with race direction and medical.

WBGT questions

What does WBGT stand for?
Wet bulb globe temperature. It is a heat-stress index that includes air temperature, humidity (via the wet bulb), and radiant heat (via the globe), with wind affecting the wet-bulb term.
Can HeatTrackR show WBGT if my sensor only reports temperature and humidity?
It can estimate WBGT from those inputs and label it estimated. That is not the same as a reading from a WBGT instrument. If you need measured WBGT, use a device that reports it — for example a Kestrel 5400FW through the IrisTrackR gateway.
Are the colored bands my event’s official thresholds?
No. They help staff scan the console. Set alert rules to the numbers your medical director already uses.
